Scope & Content This collection centers on Herbert Creecy's prolific career as an artist in Georgia between 1964 and 2003. Though the bulk of the collection dates during his lifetime, there are a few articles and videos that were added by Herbert Lee Creecy III after his father's death in 2003. The collection includes hundreds of slides, depicting images of his artwork, some images of works in exhibitions and Creecy himself at work in his studio. Works include images of paintings, sketches, polly transfers, and sculpture including such series as his toy series, Shaking Shanties, linear compositions, portraits, landscapes and more. Sketchbooks dated randomly between 1994-2002 reveal the importance he placed on discipline and steady, dedicated practice and precision. The sketches are composed of mostly abstract and floral forms, linear sketches resembling computer circuits and abstract aerial landscapes. Most are done in black pen and ink, but there are some in color.

Creecy collected Georgia newspaper and magazine clipping from the 1960's to 2002, which follow the highlights of his career through numerous gallery exhibitions in and around Atlanta Georgia. Also included in the collections are periodicals and books with articles and reviews of his work. Numerous exhibition catalogues and invitations represent most of the exhibitions in which he participated (1964-2003). A folder of Personal letters (74-2003) reveal a mix of business and personal life as they are often from artist friends and collectors discussing the art world or their own works. They include a few interesting pieces of poetry from friends. There are two folders of business letters (1963-2002) regarding, art competitions, awards won, benefits and auctions, exhibitions, acquisitions and loans of his work to museum, galleries and private collectors, notes from admiring students of art, and requests for use of his work in books and articles. These folders include student evaluation form results from his time as a guest instructor at the University of Tennessee charting his performance as a teacher, and French official forms and ID's from his year in Paris (1964). There are a few folders containing pictures of family and friends, images of Creecy working in his studio and at exhibitions, and several transparencies and negatives strips of his artwork.

Creecy's printed materials include numerous invitations and catalogues from the exhibitions and competitions in which he participated including The High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Zinc contemporary art, Atlanta; Lamar Dodd Art Center, LaGrange, GA , City Gallery East, Atlanta; Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta; OK Harris Gallery, New York; Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, GA; Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia SC; Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture, University of Tennessee; New Orleans Museum of Art; New Orleans, LA; Naples and Rome, and many more.

A group of 3-D materials also exists as part of this collection, including small sculptures and sculptural elements, most likely from the 1980's when Creecy was most actively making "toys"; a box of used paint brushes, trowels and tools, and an approximately 12' painting trough made from a metal rain gutter, all of which may date up until his death in 2003. These objects were obtained directly from his studio in Barnesville, GA, and give a glimpse into his creative process.

After his death, three original VHS tapes about Creecy's life and work were added to this collection by his son Herbert Lee Creecy III. In addition, all the digital imagery and code for the his website http://www.herbertcreecy.com/ was donated to the collection by his son.
Biographical History Herbert Lee Creecy, Jr. (1939-2003) was an exceptionally talented and successful abstract expressionist artist of Georgia. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Creecy grew up in Atlanta, attending Buckhead's E. Rivers Elementary School where he met lifetime friends Alston Glen, Shepard Ansley and Alfred Kennedy. After graduating from Northside High School and a two year stint at the University of Alabama (originally for dentistry), where he studied commercial art, Creecy returned to Atlanta, married, and took a job in advertising at Rich's Department store. Within a year he left advertising and enrolled in the Atlanta School of art, graduating in 1964. Though his marriage did not survive his college years, Atlanta School of Art faculty chose Creecy as the recipient of an annual fellowship from the French government to study abroad. Creecy studied with Stanley William Hayter founder of Atelier 17 studio established in Montparnasse in 1927. Hayter influenced and taught print making to many famous artist including Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, and Marc Chagall.

From the start, Creecy was a favorite of then High Museum of Art director Gudmund Vigtel, earning him solo shows in 1964 and 1971 . He moved out of the City of Atlanta in the early 1970's, first to an old Wooden house in Suwanee, then settling into a large old cotton mill in Barnesville, GA. This space was both studio and living quarters for many years, and remained his studio for the rest of his life. Even in his early years he was a prolific painter, averaging 10 paintings a week. Upon his death in 2003, there were 3000 paintings in his Barnesville studio. In addition to many group exhibitions, Creecy averaged one solo show per year throughout much of his working career. Not long after his second show at the High Museum, he impressed the owner of the famous New York O K Harris gallery so much, that he quickly earned a one man show, and recognition in the harsh but profitable art market of Soho. Creecy was often displeased with Atlanta's art market; the disinterest forcing artists to go elsewhere if they truly wanted to gain recognition in the arts.

Despite his New York success, Creecy chose to remain a Southern artist, but his artwork can be found in collections around the country including the Whitney Museum, The Corcoran Museum, The Akron Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Cornell University among other collections. His work is also found in both private and corporate institutions. The National Bank of Georgia, Portman Properties, the Marriot Marquis in Atlanta, the Waverly Hotel and the McDonald's Corporation have preserved his legacy through their permanent collections. His work has been exhibited all over the United States, from Georgia to Washington DC, New York and California, as well as internationally in Italy and London. He exhibited at the Atlanta Art Association, Art in the Embassies program, US Department of State, Clark College, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia to name a few, and in 1977 his work was included in the Biennial at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

For a short time during his career, Creecy worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Georgia and in 1990 he was invited as a visiting art instructor to the University of Knoxville. His passion, however, was always creating art. He developed many techniques including utilizing an air-brush to splay wet paint with a rhythmic effect, and a technique borrowed from printmaking and polyurethane transfers, in which he applied the polymer on the canvas and used a squeegee to press the liquid into the top layer of paint creating new dimension and random contours upon the canvas.
